Beethoven Transcription Project
My original viola transcriptions of Beethoven’s Sonatas for Piano and Violin have been presented on concert series across the United States and at the Sydney Conservatorium. This is part of an ongoing publishing and recording project begun in hopes of increasing Beethoven’s voice in the viola recital repertoire. My upcoming performances of these works include the 50th International Viola Congress (Paris, France) on January 22, 2026, and the 2026 American Viola Society Festival (James Madison University) on June 3, 2026.
Beethoven’s ten sonatas for piano and violin contain all the stylistic and challenging elements necessary to begin familiarizing oneself with Beethoven’s voice. The intimate orchestration, just one violin (or viola, in this case) with piano, allows these pieces to be easily placed on a solo recital program and demands that the performer truly analyze and consider interpretive choices. I’ve approached the work of transcribing the sonatas in the spirit of other successful additions to the viola repertoire, such as the Schubert Arpeggione Sonata, the Brahms clarinet sonatas, and the Franck Violin Sonata—all originally written for other instruments but now staples for violists. I have found that these pieces, when assigned to young violists, stretches them as musical interpreters, as technicians, and as chamber musicians.
Scores will be available soon by request. E-mail me or message me through social media for more info.
